~  The Magic Pudding - Norman Lindsay

Hurry… don’t miss out… bookings filling fast

All Day or Afternoon Only – Cost:  $40 ($35 concession)

Dates:  Tues 18th, Wed 19th fully booked

Thurs 20th November - tickets still available

 Time:  9.45am – 3pm or 12.45pm – 3pm

Stephanie Daniel and David Tredinnick read Norman Lindsay’s “The Magic Pudding” - much magic indeed … Sir George Tallis knew Norman Lindsay, “he particularly enjoyed some very happy hours with the ‘bon vivant’ Norman Lindsay and was impressed by his art and conversation”  The Silent Showman.  “The Magic Pudding has been a source of wonder and amusement for nearly 90 years: no matter how much the reader gets out of the story, there is, as with the Pudding itself, always something left.  But to its author, artist and writer, Norman Lindsay (1879-1969), the book was a ‘little bundle of piffle’. Written as a distraction from the horrors of World War 1 and his brother’s death on the Somme, he thought it held him back as a serious writer.  The story arose out of a professional disagreement Lindsay had with fellow writer, Bertram Stevens, who thought that fairies were the most popular subject for a children’s story. Lindsay believed it was food. The pudding won! (The National Library of Australia,  from Australian Great Library’s National Treasures.)  -  To be read against a background using Norman Lindsay’s original illustrations.

~  The Third Annual Sir George Tallis Oration

(To celebrate the arrival of Sir George Tallis in Australia on Saturday 24th November 1886)

Sorry… Booked out!!!

All Day or Afternoon Only – Cost:  $40 ($35 concession)

Date:   Monday 24th November  Time:  9.45am – 3pm or 12.45pm – 3pm

Sir George Tallis arrived in Australia in 1886 – with, it is said, ‘only 14 shillings in his pocket’.  He was 17 years old – when he died in 1948 he had achieved great success. A knighthood for his services to the theatre, a reward for a life spent organizing cultural entertainment world wide. He headed JC Williamson Ltd, arguably one of, if not the greatest, theatrical empire the world has ever seen.  To celebrate his arrival in Australia on 24 November, 1886, we present on Monday 24th November, the Sir George Tallis Oration, this year presented by Anna French – My Most Enjoyable Career.  Anna French will discuss her relationship with the legendary designer Kristian Fredrikson, who was an early mentor, collaborator and friend. She is currently establishing The Kristian Fredrikson Scholarship For Design in The Performing Arts as an ongoing memorial to Kristian, who was one of Australia’s most distinguished performing arts designers. He died in 2005.

Anna became Resident Designer with the State Theatre Company of South Australia after commencing her career in the wardrobe department of the Melbourne Theatre Company working with Kristian Fredrikson. In 2005, she received the Kenneth Myer Medallion for the Performing Arts for outstanding and distinguished services to the performing arts.  New Zealand born, Kristian Fredrikson was first invited to Australia to design Aurora’s Wedding in the early 1960s by the Australian Ballet. A long association with the Sydney Dance Company’s choreographer, Graeme Murphy, generated many innovative and sensually compelling productions, most notably Scheherazade (1979), and Swan Lake (2002) for the Australian Ballet.  In 1981 the New York Times review of Scheherazade described Fredrikson as “… quite simply one of the finds of the season, a designer all dance companies should grab”.

Fredrikson’s work was acclaimed for its sumptuous, jewel-like quality and a sensuous level of detail. (The Tallis Foundation is supporting this endeavour)

There are few tales in the cannon of English Literature which so truly evoke the spirit and tradition of Christmas than Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, so nostalgically depicted in the snow and glitter of English Christmas greeting cards. Stephanie Daniel, in costume, reads from A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens’ much loved tale of Christmas’ past.  To set the mood, coffee and Christmas cake on arrival, followed by a tour of the House and Garden, beautifully forested with traditional Christmas trees. Our visitors will then move back to the Melba Room for Christmas light lunch and a glass of champagne. After lunch, settle back to enjoy the very talented Stephanie Daniel, reading Dickens A Christmas CarolDevised by Stephanie Daniel.  A few years ago, Stephanie recorded this masterpiece. The CD will be available exclusively at Beleura – surely a wonderful Christmas gift idea.

June

~ David McNicol plays Tallis ~

John Tallis, Composer of Lyrical Elegant Music

All Day or Afternoon only

Date: June 9      Time 9.45am-3pm (or ½ day: 12.45-3pm)      Cost: Adults $43 (Concession $38)

On Saturday 9th  June 1945 The Melbourne Argus reviewed a recital given by Dorian le Galliene and John Tallis:

“ARGUS, SAT June 9/45 - Composers give Recital - More than ordinary interest centred round the piano recital given last night at British Music Society of Victoria’s rooms by John Tallis and Dorian le Gallienne, for in addition to items from Mozart, Schubert, Ravel, and Brahms, each of the recitalists contributed an original composition to the joint programme. John Tallis, in a prelude and fugue, developed a well-thought-out modern idiom, which did not lack signs of real originality. Dorian le Gallienne in a sonatina of considerable charm showed himself less original, but though highly reminiscent of the modern French school, his work has fluency, and it would be interesting to hear more of it.”

To celebrate this day, David McNicol will present a recital featuring John Tallis’ work including the ‘well-thought-out’ prelude and fugue. David McNicol, a fine pianist, has performed throughout Asia and Europe. He has also accompanied some of Australia’s most distinguished singers in recitals.

David is consulting with Joel Crotty, Executor of John Tallis’ Music, about recording John Tallis’ music. The CD will be launched to commemorate this day in 1945.

 ~ Florence – Young as Ever! ~

Wendy Grose becomes Florence Young

… singing and dancing her way through the highlights of a fabulous career ...

Dates:  June 17, 18, 19 & 20      Time 9.45am-3pm (or ½ day: 12.45-3pm)      Cost:  $40 (Concession $35)

A sparkling, extravagant musical journey through the life of Sir George Tallis’ sister-in-law whom the great Melba encouraged, not seeing her as the rival she might well have been. Florence’s voice was considered superb but she preferred the musical and lyric comic opera stage rather than Melba’s world of grand opera. Written and directed by Stephanie Daniel. Costume by Heather Peake.      A great production and wonderful fun!
