The Story of the Most Beautiful House on the Peninsula: Beleura. An illustrated talk by Pru Evans, researcher and archivist at Beleura James Butchart, one of Victoria’s most successful but uncelebrated pioneers built his house Beleura at Schnapper Point - now Mornington in 1863. Finding the tenders in The Argus newspaper for the ‘ERECTION of VILLA RESIDENCE at Schnapper Point’ lead to many more mysteries about the original family, the architect and the meaning of the name Beleura being solved. A Dancer’s Life A Conversation between Barry Kitcher and Frank Van Straten exploring the William Akers AM and Roger Myers Collection Frank Van Straten, Theatre Historian and Barry Kitcher, celebrated dancer, will reminisce, gossip and answer questions. Like other old houses there are things tucked away which conceal or confuse their purpose, story or use. Deborah Bannister, doyenne of Kitchenalia, who has mysteries of her own to tell, and Anthony Knight will chat and speculate about a selection of objects that will be on show to unravel and reveal their stories. Hansel and Gretel One of the surprising areas at Beleura is the Hansel and Gretel Garden, a Theatre Tableau. Originally created for grown-ups, this most eccentric expression of John Tallis’s taste has been adapted for children. Children will be encouraged to take part in this re-creation which will start with morning tea, a ramble through and discovery of the secret garden and the telling of the tale followed by a lunch party in the courtyard.
